Damn shame

Heard about this on the way to work today:
A gunman charged onstage at a packed nightclub and opened fire on the band and the crowd, killing top heavy metal guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and three other people before a police officer shot him to death, authorities and witnesses said.

RIP, Darrell Abbott, 1966-2004
And just when he was starting to write decent music again, too (after the last few sub-par Pantera CDs). My condolences to his brother, his family, the band, and the families of the others (including fans) who were killed and injured.
Sad to say, before I heard any of the details I thought “well, Phil finally snapped.” Goes to show that it’s not worth holding a grudge against someone, because you never know when they (or you) will be gone.
(Michele has more, and you can scroll around here to read how the news story unfolded.)
UPDATE: Re: Michele’s expectation that the “your children are not safe at rock concerts!” BS will return. It will probably happen, but I’m guessing gun control talk will take over. Plus, since all the online news sources I’ve seen have shown pictures of the band, there’ll be a lot of “I’m sure the music was violent, so they got what they deserved” talk as well. Already this morning the KQRS morning show, slightly more informed about Pantera and Dimebag than I expected, went with something like “Pantera was the music for the depressed high schoolers, so this won’t be a tragedy as much as wish-fulfillment for the fans.” Uh, not exactly, guys. Especially since those of us who were fans in high school are now over a decade older (and a lot of us still like the music).
NOTE: one update removed and placed in next post.
YEAH, THERE’S ALWAYS MORE: A weird tidbit from the local news station:
There were no Columbus police officers inside the club due to a policy that prohibits officers from working inside liquor establishments, Mull said. Alrosa Villa management was in charge of the building’s security, Mull said.
Anybody know the reasoning behind that policy? Not that a different one could have prevented this, but I’ve never heard of a similar one (although, come to think of it, I’ve never seen a cop inside First Ave or The Quest).
