World Cup Preview pt. III -- USA! USA! [cough]
· 06/09/2006 07:26 PM by Steve Gigl
Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 in the first game of the Cup, and I’m sure the haters are going to have a field day with reports that this is the highest-scoring World Cup opener in history. [Just remember; if a team was able to lose 8-1 in a soccer match, they wouldn’t have made it to the World Cup.]
Anyway. As usual, it seems like nobody is giving the USA a chance in hell of winning the World Cup this year. Shocked, aren’t you?

| Who are they laughing at? |
So there’s a bit of progress there to attempt continue, but the history is a bit choppy. And this year is no better, with lots of media suggestions that the US team will go 3-and-out this year. And with Italy (not terribly highly-ranked this year, but always good) and the Czech Republic in our group, we had better at least beat Ghana.
But before that, we have a weekend of games to help get us acquainted with the other teams (channels and times are local to the Minneapolis area):
- Ecuador vs. Poland, ESPNCL, Sat Jun 10 01:00am CDT
- England vs. Paraguay, KSTP, Sat Jun 10 08:00am CDT
- Sweden vs. Trinidad & Tobago, KSTP, Sat Jun 10 11:00am CDT
- Argentina vs. Côte d’Ivoire, ESPN2, Sat Jun 10 01:55pm CDT
- Netherlands vs. Serbia and Montenegro, ESPN2, Sun Jun 11 07:55am CDT
- Iran vs. Mexico, KSTP, Sun Jun 11 10:30am CDT
- Angola vs. Portugal, ESPN2, Sun Jun 11 01:55pm CDT
Am I going to watch that much soccer? Well, I can’t move around much and should be resting, but even so, I doubt it. I’ll probably at least check out as much of the England, Argentina, and Iran games as I can.

Oh, I’ll root for them, and I was actually pretty optimistic until I saw the US media trying to build up the team during the coverage of the other games.
It’s the contrarian in me, I guess.
