Who is this guy?

· Fri Dec 3, 12:56 PM by Steve Gigl

It occurred to me a few weeks ago that since I made the move off of the U of M servers, I haven’t posted an “About the author” entry. And since the previous version (here) hasn’t been updated for almost a year, I wanted to write a whole new one anyway.

First, some quick-and-easy stuff:
Name: Look at the URL. Yes, that’s really my last name…
Blog topics: Anything and everything; I’m weaning myself off of politics for a while after this election, but that and media criticism (plus lots of personal stuff) is what you’ll see a lot of in the archives. I also try to write music and book reviews at Blogcritics, but sadly am far, far behind in my reviews.
Occupation: Electrical engineer / permanent student
Age: 29
Marital Status: Happily married to a lovely woman I’ll refer to on this blog as MLW
Physical description: average height, average build, slight beer gut, brownish short hair. Yeah, I don’t know what my wife sees in me either…
Pets: 1 cat (Kivrin, gray and white), 1 dog (Gracie, English Springer Spaniel)
Ethnicity: German on one side, Irish/English on the other. Yes, I have the occasional beer, why do you ask?
Political orientation: Center-right, with a few libertarian tendencies.
Home: Crystal, MN
Birthplace: Fond du Lac, WI
Places I’ve lived: Menomonee Falls, WI (suburb of Milwaukee); Allouez, WI (suburb of Green Bay); various apartments and houses in Minneapolis and its western suburbs.

Hobbies:

  • Active: Music, blogging, homebrewing, reading science fiction, soccer, cooking, baking
  • Inactive: Model airplanes, fiction writing, playing bass guitar and trombone, general gadgetry

Oh, there’s more…

FAQ OK, more like NAQ:

  1. How do you pronounce your last name? Believe it or not, it’s pronounced “guy-gul.” (The un-Americanized pronunciation—it’s a German name—would be something like “gee-gul.”)
  2. OK, what’s the deal with the title? Right. Well, it’s changed twice in the last year or so, so don’t get to attached to it, but it’s a phrase used by the late great Douglas Adams in Life, the Universe, and Everything.
  3. What’s with the small text? Well, let’s just say sometimes I let my inner voices be heard.
  4. What did you mean by “permanent student?” Well, I started college at the U of M in 1994, and I’m still attending classes over a decade later. I got my BSEE in 1999, and am working slowly—veeeeeerrrry slowly—towards an MSEE, which I should complete this year if all goes well.

Do you really want more? No? Too bad! MWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!...

Favorites

  • Food: italian (pizza, pasta, red sauce only please)
